The boy who knew too much: a child prodigy

This is the true story of scientific child prodigy, and former baby genius, Ainan Celeste Cawley, written by his father. It is the true story, too, of his gifted brothers and of all the Cawley family. I write also of child prodigy and genius in general: what it is, and how it is so often neglected in the modern world. As a society, we so often fail those we should most hope to see succeed: our gifted children and the gifted adults they become. Site Copyright: Valentine Cawley, 2006 +

The death of Jacintha Saldanha at the virtual hands of Mel Grieg and Michael Christian

Australian DJs, Mel Grieg and Michael Christian should be considered murderers. They are the pranksters who called the King Edward VII hospital, impersonating the Queen and Prince Charles, seeking private information, on the health of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate. The nurse, Jacintha Saldanha, who first took that call and put it through, has been found dead. The implication is, of course, that she committed suicide, although no details have yet been released.

I realize that the law is silent on this kind of situation. I view it in moral terms. Mel Grieg and Michael Christian, committed an immoral act – that of impersonating the Queen and Prince Charles, to gain access to private information about a public figure and member of the Royal household. That is clearly wrong in so many ways. They knew this when they planned it and carried it out. They saw this as a “joke”, something to be laughed at – but it has had the consequence of the death of a well-regarded nurse. Since the nurse’s death is a direct consequence of their actions, I feel they should be charged with some variety of murder, however such things are framed in Australian law. They should pay for their moral crime, with a real prison sentence – anything less would, itself, be immoral, for it would say that it is OK to shame someone to death – which is what they did to this nurse.

Mel Grieg and Michael Christian acted without forethought as to the consequences of their act – but nevertheless, they should have to pay for those consequences.

Were it my decision to make, I would have Mel Grieg and Michael Christian charged with murder, or manslaughter and prosecuted.

I expect, however, that they will get away with a period of public shame (ironically) followed by a resumption of their show (which has been taken off the air, at present). As for that – it is clear that they should never be allowed to be on air, again – for being a broadcaster of any kind is a responsibility they are not fit for.

I would also welcome a civil case for damages from Jacintha Saldanha’s family against Mel Grieg and Michael Christian. Perhaps while mulling their loss of personal fortune, along with personal freedom, behind bars, Grieg and Christian (whose behaviour wasn’t very Christian at all), might come to understand the reasons why moral conduct is considered preferable and how much harm immoral conduct can do.

How to be unfashionable: be heterosexual.

I had the strangest experience a couple of weeks ago. It occurred on Facebook. Someone had posted a comment on their page, which provoked a conversation that struck me as most bizarre. There were, perhaps, a dozen people contributing to the talk. Its subject was human attraction. Now, this might not strike you as a bizarre subject – but the way everyone responded to it, was most strange. You see, out of the dozen or so people commenting on the post, I was the ONLY one who wrote in defence of heterosexuality. Everyone else wrote comments in support of the “rightness” of people finding the same sex attractive. A few commenters even said that it was natural for “heterosexual” people to find the same sex attractive – and jumped on me when I pointed out that that would be the viewpoint of a bisexual.

The conversation was quite a long one, but eventually I withdrew from commenting any further, because the comments against my viewpoint (that heterosexuality was the natural, biologically determined position, otherwise none of us would be here) and against me, personally, were becoming too aggressive. Not only was I surrounded by a dozen proponents of homosexuality and bisexuality – but they were becoming increasingly aggressive in their comments and attacks. I, on the other hand, remained polite and civil throughout, even when faced with a particular commenter who was being strongly abusive.

I must say, this experience really puzzled me. You see, of the many, many people on my FB and on the FB of those others who commented, there would have been many heterosexuals – in fact, most people on them would, I assume, have been heterosexual. Yet, not ONE of these heterosexuals was brave enough to stand up for the heterosexual viewpoint – I, alone, spoke out in favour of heterosexuality. It should be noted that I did not speak against homosexuality or bisexuality in any way – I only spoke up for heterosexuality as the default position of biology. I only spoke in terms of what biologically made sense. I did not address sociological or sub-cultural issues at all. My antagonists, however, were very abusive, at times, against the heterosexual position and me, in particular. So, not only was I being ambushed by a dozen homosexuals/bisexuals, some of whom claimed to be “straight”, implicitly by claiming that it was normal for heterosexuals to be attracted to the same sex – but I was being attacked, sometimes, quite rudely by these people. My question is: why? Why did these pink proponents feel the need to ambush me – and why did they feel the need to do so, so aggressively, when everything I said was true, uncontroversial, and just basic biology?

It seems to me that two things have happened. Firstly, heterosexuals now feel unable to defend themselves in public, they feel they should be silent collectively, on the issue of their viewpoint on life. Secondly homosexuals and bisexuals, feel so emboldened to speak out, that they forcibly push their viewpoints and way of life, onto everyone else, whenever they get the opportunity. Not only that, but some of them do so in an offensive, rude, aggressive manner. They seem to feel anger at the existence of heterosexuals (without which they would not be), and seem to want to extinguish that way of life. The madness of all of this is that the majority position – heterosexuality – now feels unable to speak up in public. The reason for this is clear. If a heterosexual speaks up for their position, many homosexuals and bisexuals will attack them, accusing them of being “homophobic”. The funny thing is, heterosexuals are usually not homophobic at all, when they speak for themselves, however, homosexuals are very frequently HETEROphobic (my spell checker says such a word does not exist, but it should, because heterophobia is a LOT more common among homosexuals, in my experience, than homophobia is among heterosexuals).

So, what I experienced was a “heterophobic” ambush. I spoke out for the biological reasons behind heterosexuality – and was shouted down by a lot of people whose views were clearly homosexual and bisexual in content, some of them in an offensive manner. It seems that no other heterosexual reading the exchange was brave enough to contribute. This strikes me as dangerous. We are now in a world in which heterosexuality may not be spoken of, in some circles – without being attacked. We are in a world in which homosexuality is fashionable, to the degree that those who are not practising it, or openly evangelizing for it, are to be attacked or rejected. Heterosexuality on the other hand, is unfashionable in some circles. It is almost as if homosexuals and bisexuals think the world would be better off without heterosexuals, at all. They seem to forget how the human race is brought into being with each generation.

Sadly, my experience of being ambushed for speaking out in support of heterosexuality – against those who were criticizing it – was so unpleasant that I might hesitate to do so, again, in future. The hassle is not really worth it. Life is too short to spend it being abused by strangers, for one’s views. So it is, that the homosexual community entrains the heterosexual community to shut up. Everyone they abuse is another person who is likely to keep silent again, in future.

The oddest part about this experience was that the conversation was started by a Malay woman who spoke in favour of homosexuality. This is odd, because homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia. However, it does appear to have a very vocal minority who support it – at least, online. Many of the other commenters appeared to be American.

Now, it should be noted, here, that I have no issues with people choosing their own way of life. They are free to do as they please. However, what I do have an issue with, is when they feel it necessary to abuse those who hold a different view, perhaps even the majority view – as they abused me, for holding a heterosexual viewpoint. To my mind, by being abusive to those who hold a different viewpoint, they invalidate their own right to hold their viewpoint. If they are going to hold a different viewpoint and way of life, they MUST NOT abuse others who hold a different viewpoint. Yet, that is what they were doing. This lost them any sympathy for their viewpoint that I had had before the conversation began. Being abusive to strangers – as they were to me, since none of the commenters, apart from one , was actually a Facebook friend of mine – is never going to do any good for their cause.

This taught me a lesson though. The promotion of homosexual “rights” has gone too far, in some parts of the world. It has gone so far, that heterosexuals are frightened to speak up for themselves. That is completely mad. Homosexuals say they seek “equality” but what they really seem to seek, going by the conversation I had, is total dominance. Already, the situation has become highly unequal. Homosexuals feel free to speak out at any time – whereas heterosexuals are now frightened to speak up for themselves, for they are inevitably accused of “homophobia” when they do – even when they say nothing against homosexuals at all. Well it is time for heterosexuals to start using the word “heterophobia” and “heterophobic” to describe the attacks quite a few homosexuals make on them. It is time for heterosexuals to speak out for their viewpoint and position on life – before it becomes the minority position. Where would the human race be then?

The Amazon publishing boycott: an unexpected effect.

A war has begun. It is a war between unlikely combatants. On one side there are the world’s physical bookshops and on the other, there is the online store, Amazon. It is not a war of weapons, or of blood, but still, in one sense, it is no less deadly, for these organizations are fighting to survive. Already the Borders book chain has closed up shop, in the USA. The remaining bookshops are certainly under strain. Yet, this war has only just begun. The latest move is the decision by Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million and Indigo (the Canadian chain of 247 stores), to refuse to stock any book published by Amazon. They are basically boycotting all Amazon books.

Now, at first sight, this might appear to be a damaging move for Amazon. Any book published by Amazon will not be able to get distribution in these major chains. Thus, any book published by Amazon, would have restricted distribution, reduced sales and much lower likelihood of success than otherwise. Furthermore, any author considering a deal from Amazon Publishing, would have to reflect that their book would not be seen in major bookstores if he or she accepted the deal. This might lead authors to decline Amazon publishing deals. So, yes, at first sight this does appear damaging to Amazon. Yet, is it?

Consider this. If a book is not available in any of the major bookstores, a reader simply cannot buy it in a physical bookstore. Yet, this reader may very well have read of the book, in reviews, or online, or heard about it from friends. They may, therefore, wish to secure a copy of it. Where would they go...but to Amazon, of course. This would mean that the reader, on discovering that no physical bookstore stocks the book, would log on to Amazon and discover it there. They would then order the book from Amazon. What does this do? It is another step towards creating a habit in the reader, to buy their books from Amazon. Furthermore, the observed fact that all the physical bookstores did NOT have the book – but Amazon DOES, would reinforce the impression that Amazon is superior to physical bookstores in having a broader stock. Thus, this move by the major bookstores in boycotting Amazonian books, is actually an extremely self-defeating move. It would only prove to the reader that physical bookstores don’t have a wide range. This would increase the likelihood that, when moved to look for a book, the FIRST place that the reader will go to, would be Amazon. The major bookstores, by refusing to stock Amazon Publishing titles, are actually taking one more step towards their doom.

Remember this: most readers will not know of the war between Amazon and the physical bookstore chains. The only thing they will come to know is that the physical bookstore chains don’t stock the book they seek – but Amazon does. So, the only real effect of this boycott, is to lower the reputation of the physical bookstores. Clearly, the major book chains have not thought this move through. It is not the act of a genius of a general, but the act of a foolishly short-sighted person, who is behaving spitefully, rather than intelligently. Seeing this decision, I can only say that my estimation of the survivability of the major bookstore chains, has been lowered. I really do not think that they are being run by intelligent people. This decision is childish, short-sighted, and somewhat suicidal in flavour.

Also look at the bigger picture effect of this snub, by the major bookstore chains, on Amazon. Since Amazon is no longer allowed access to the bookstores, there is now no need AT ALL, for Amazon to permit the existence of the bookstore chains. Were Amazon’s books stocked in the major book chains, it would have reason enough not to compete too much with them, and to keep them alive, since their distribution abilities would then be useful to it. Now, however, with this boycott, the bookstore chains become superfluous to Amazon – indeed, they have become nothing more than direct competitors. In this situation, the best thing for Amazon to do, is to eliminate the competition altogether. I can therefore see that this boycott by the major bookstore chains, is going to have a contradictory effect. Instead of weakening Amazon, it is going to weaken the bookstores (for it will lower their reputation for being well-stocked and it will encourage online book purchases) – and it will also strengthen Amazon’s resolve to bring them down.

The major bookstore chains are likely to go out of business, in years to come, not because of Amazon, entirely, but because of themselves. They are not being led by wise men (or women) and their business strategies are actually self-defeating or suicidal, if viewed with a deeper understanding of all their ramifications. The major bookstore chains are doomed to die – not from competition, but from stupidity.

At this time, it looks very much like Amazon will win this war and that the major bookstore chains will leave the scene, one by one. This, however, could have been avoided if only both sides had worked out a way to co-exist. This could have been done quite simply: all the major bookstore chains had to do, was to stock Amazon’s books...then Amazon would have reason to keep them alive, or not to push them out too strongly. Now, however, it is very much a Last Man Standing scenario...and that “man” is almost certainly going to be Amazon.

Ron Fouchier and the end of the world.

Will Ron Fouchier’s curiosity and, it seems ego, end the modern era? Dr. Ron Fouchier is a virologist at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. He is also the creator of, most probably, the most deadly virus ever seen on Earth.

Ron Fouchier has mutated the bird flu, H5N1, into an airborne form, that transmits easily from host to host – and would do so, too, in humans. If his virus were ever to be released into the world, it would kill 50 to 60% of all who caught it: billions of people would die. Civilization itself might fall, in the chaos and terror of such a pandemic, in which simply breathing the air, breathed out by another, some distance away, would be enough to kill.

Apparently, it took, we are told, just five mutations, to change ordinary bird flu – which kills over 50% of those infected, but rarely transmits between people – into an easily transmissible airborne version, that spreads as easily as any other flu – but which is up to 30 times as deadly as the Spanish flu of 1918, which only killed 2% of those it infected.

Truly, this virus is a potential doomsday weapon. Yet, it is held in a special room at the Erasmus Medical Center, in Rotterdam. Should it ever be leaked, billions could die as a result. Richard H. Ebright, a bioweapons expert at Rutgers University commented that there had been hundreds of unintentional leaks of potential bioweapons from US labs – and regarding airborne H5N1 he opined: “It will inevitably escape and within a decade”. Should it ever do so, Ron Fouchier would become the most destructive person in human history. His work would have killed billions of people.

There is only one justification for the kind of work Ron Fouchier has done. That is if this work leads to a means to defeat this illness and prevent it ever becoming a pandemic. However, now that he has created it and spoken of its details at public meetings, it is likely that others will recreate the work. As similar viruses are created elsewhere, the chances of an accidental or deliberate leak escalate. The race, therefore, is now on, between those who would defeat this potential pandemic, and those who would unleash it, accidentally or deliberately.

Oftentimes, it seems that modern man does not have long in this world. We have the intelligence to create powerful technologies, but not the wisdom, as a race, to use them wisely. Ron Fouchier’s work could lead directly to the downfall of modern civilization. Were 60% of people to die, days after being exposed to no more than a sneeze, I very much doubt whether the fabric of civilization would hold – it would rupture into utter terrified chaos.

The real danger of Ron Fouchier’s H5N1 work is that now all the world’s terrorists and unhinged haters of humanity, will know that it is possible to create an airborne H5N1 – by simply announcing that, he has ensured that many others, around the world, will try to do so. Even if these groups don’t deliberately release it, simply by working on it, they greatly increase the chances that it will be released accidentally. Then again, there are foreign powers who might consider releasing such a virological agent. What might North Korea, for instance, do with such a virus? Would they consider it reasonable to lose 60% of their own population (which they don’t seem to have much love for), so as to kill 60% of the rest of the world? Some unstable nation, somewhere, might make that calculation and make a fateful decision.

The onus is now on Ron Fouchier and all the virologists familiar with his work, to create a vaccine against H5N1, or to derive some other means of defeating it. If this is not done, the time might come, after the modern era, when the name Ron Fouchier is remembered for all the wrong reasons.

I am struck by the hint of a self-satisfied smile that seems to adorn all photos of Ron Fouchier that I have seen. I am not sure whether I am reading him wrongly or not – but he does seem to be rather impressed with himself. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be potentially responsible for the death of 60% of humanity and the fall of the modern era – yet that is precisely the potential of the work he seems so smug about.

Now, that you have made the virus Ron, you have a responsibility to learn how to defeat it. Only then would you truly deserve a self-satisfied smile. Only then, will humanity be able to relax, before its impending fate.

Air: Ainan's first word.

Now, I realize that the word is confusing, but Ainan’s first word was “Air”. This is not the stuff you breathe, but is, in fact, the Malay for water. Now, to an English speaking ear, or at least my ear, it seems to be pronounced “Eye – Ay”, or “Ayer”. I have referred to it variously as either of those terms, in my writings, because, if I referred to it as “Air” EVERYONE who was English, would misunderstand which word was being referred to and would get the pronunciation wrong.

Ainan began saying Air (water) whenever he was thirsty, from just two weeks old. Now, I have been attacked a lot, on the Internet, by often quite dumb people, for revealing this. They don’t believe it. Well, that is their problem since Ainan’s early speech was witnessed by a lot of people – since we have a large family and plenty of friends. Why, on Earth, would a large group of people decide to make something up like that? There is no reason to do so. Ainan spoke from a couple of weeks old, words in context and with meaning. It was clear that the words had the intended meaning because when we met the interpreted need, for instance, by giving him a drink, whenever he said “Air”, he would STOP SAYING THE WORD. This is rather clear proof that the word had the intended meaning.

His second word, at a few weeks old, was “poo”, which he would say whenever his nappy needed changing. He would say it repeatedly, in a long, slow drawn out way, “Poooooooooo!”, many times, until we checked his nappies and found it to be the case that he needed changing. Only then would he stop saying it.

Ainan is the way he is and was the way he was. There is no doubt about his early speech, his early crawling, walking, running, reading, or anything else. It just was. If anyone doubts us, then the problem is in their own mind and doesn’t exist in the real world. In the real world, Ainan is at University, doing sciences, at 11. He started tertiary education at 8. So, how would the conspiracy nuts explain that one? Did that not happen either? Perhaps they should start reading the newspapers more regularly. For me, the doubters seem utterly bonkers, because all the evidence, from a very large number of witnesses, is against them. Yet, they, who have never met Ainan, and know nothing about him, firsthand, think they know better. Such people are the definition of insane, of course.

“MrTrueGenius” pointed my way to a conversation on Youtube, with one of these nutters. This particular nutter “visioninScience”, thinks that Ainan’s first word was not a word because the spelling of “Air” differs from “Ayer”. He or she is too dumb to realize that I was trying to render the pronunciation, somewhat phonetically, in the spelled word, so that an English person would understand how it was said. What is most odd is that this person concedes that “Air” is pronounced “Ayer” in English, but doesn’t even realize that that is what I was trying to convey. Dumb.

I would like to thank MrTrueGenius (YouTube account name) for notifying me of the exchange on Youtube, regarding one of the videos that references Ainan. Personally, I find the ignorant attempts to diminish Ainan, from people who know nothing about him, very tiring. I wonder at their motivation and their reasoning: since they know nothing, how can they presume to pretend to know what they cannot? It is all quite bizarre – but does show that some people prefer their own private doubt-filled fantasies, to multiply verified reality. I am moved to ask, inevitably: what is the nature of a person who prefers private fantasies, to observable reality? Mad. That is right...to be a doubter, now, after so many publicly disclosed achievements by Ainan, is to be nothing more or less than a madman.

Just to make the point clear to all those confused out there. Ainan’s first word was “Air”. To communicate it, at various times, I have used different spellings to convey the sound.

Air = “Ayer” = “Eye-Ay” = Water.

I hope that is understood.

Thanks.

Texas Governor Rick Perry should not be President of the United States.

Texas Governor Rick Perry has come out saying that he doesn’t believe in global warming.

"I think we're seeing almost weekly, or even daily, scientists that are coming forward and questioning the original idea that manmade global warming is what is causing the climate to change,", he assured New Hampshire voters Wednesday.

He went onto to say that he didn’t want to spend billions or even trillions of dollars because of an “unproven theory”.

Now, I don’t know about you, but it is quite clear that the world is warming up. I just have to compare memories of my childhood to the world as it has become, to see that. Furthermore, it is well known that we are pumping historically high levels of CO2 – a greenhouse gas which induces planetary warming – into the atmosphere. Most climate scientists are of the view that recent global warming is man made, as a consequence. The connection between CO2 and global warming is clear, strong and simple. The science behind it is well known and not difficult to understand. Yet, Rick Perry is a global warming denier: he refuses to see and to accept responsibility for (as a race) the changes taking place in the world. Therefore, if he ever became President, it is obvious that Rick Perry would do NOTHING to mitigate the human impact on global warming. America would continue to be, as it is, among the world’s most irresponsible countries, in the face of global warming.

Normally, I ignore American politics, since I have an instinctive dislike for the juvenile theatrics it represents. However, in the case of Rick Perry and his “I won’t do anything about global warming” stance, I feel that I have to comment. Don’t elect Rick Perry as President of the United States. To do so, would be to ensure that America continues to do irreparable harm to the future of the planet Earth and put in question, thereby, the fate of the Human Race, itself.

Mankind faces many problems in the coming decades. Global warming is just one of them. Peak oil, is another. Global food shortages are likely to be a third dire problem. The people of the world do not need a US President, who is able to deny the reality of these problems and deliberately do nothing about them. Rick Perry should not be President of the United States, because he simply doesn’t grasp the issues he would face, as President. It does seem likely, given his remarks, that, again, Rick Perry is not a very bright candidate from the Republican Party. America seems to specialize in dumb politicians: are there no intelligent people interested in being leaders in the USA – or are they all deselected, at some early stage, so we never get to see them?

An intelligent candidate would err on the side of caution, in the global warming situation. That is, an intelligent candidate would consider it wise to do everything possible to reduce the human contributions to global warming – that is CO2 release – simply because the risk of doing nothing, is simply too great. The possible consequences of unrestrained global warming, could put the whole human race in jeopardy. It is foolish to play political games, or to seek the business vote (through “not spending billions of dollars”), when the consequences of inaction are so severe.

The USA and the world do not need a global warming denier as President. What the world really needs is an ENVIRONMENTALIST, as President of the United States. So, definitely don’t vote in Texas Governor Rick Perry as President of the United States

Echoes of Alexandria.

Once, there was a great library that held virtually all of the world’s knowledge. Barbarian thugs burnt it down.* That library was, of course, Alexandria.

Today, I learnt that, amongst all the buildings set afire by Britain’s own barbarian thugs, were two libraries – and a College. Gloucester Library and the former Salford library were both set ablaze by Britain’s rioters. So, too, the Gloucester College of Art and Technology, has been burnt to the ground.

Now, assuming the choice of these buildings was deliberate, it does say something telling about the psyche (such as they have them), of the rioters. They choose to destroy that which they are personally unable to appreciate, presumably through a combined lack of intelligence and interest in learning. These thugs are typically uneducated, largely by choice, since the opportunity of a free education was given to them all. That they should burn libraries shows that they resent the written word, as something that somehow offends their “sensibilities”. To them, perhaps, the written word and books represent a kind of oppression: it is something that caused them great difficulty in school and required effort (which is the last thing they want to make), so, when faced with an innocent, vulnerable library, their first response is to set light to it. Watching all those books burn, no doubt fills them with glee. If these rioters had their way, there would not be a single book left in the world – and then everyone would be equal in their ignorance. The rioters are unable, intellectually, to “level up” with everyone else, so they would rather level everyone else down to them, through depriving them of the books, the rioters always resented.

That Gloucester College of Art and Technology should have been set afire is also very revealing of their mentality. It seems as if they blame the education establishment, in some way, for their own predicament. Perhaps they think that the education “system”, prevented them from gaining qualifications, by some trickery, or deviousness. In truth, of course, they prevented themselves from gaining from education by making no effort within it.

The rioters’ choice of two libraries and a College to burn, is evidence that we are really dealing with barbarians here, in the truest sense of the world. Although they grew up within British culture, they are not part of it – they have their own subculture, a barbarian world with no place in our own. There are only three choices when dealing with these people: reform, exile, or containment. Of course, there is the fourth alternative: death – and perhaps it might even have to come to that, if this blight upon the British people persists in mayhem, violence, looting, arson and, I now understand, murder (three and counting).

The means must be found to reform the character, nature and outlook of these thugs. If the means cannot be found (and, in fact, it would be difficult to educate such bestial people) then we should look to long term containment of them, until such time as they are no longer a threat to society. As for exile: who would have them? Would it be fair to inflict them on anyone? If, however, a rioter should be an immigrant from another country, a fair punishment would be for any visa, or indeed citizenship of Britain, to be revoked, and for them to be sent back to their country of origin – with a permanent ban on any return. Anyone who strives to destroy society – as these thugs have – deserves to be exiled from society, forever. I intend to write a fuller approach to dealing with them, in another post.

Given that two libraries and a College have been set alight, it would seem wise if the police took particular care to set a guard at the leading libraries in the UK. I cannot, for instance, imagine the loss to the nation, were the British Library to be set on fire – or indeed, any of the major University libraries, containing, sometimes, millions of books each.

The rioters have anger. They are evil, in the sense of not seeming to know what good is, or not caring about it, at least. All that they lack, is intelligent guidance. Should there arise among them, an intelligent leader able to guide them, so as to do maximal damage, then Britain will be in a very grave situation, indeed. It is fortunate that, so far, they appear to be as stupid as they are thoughtless of others. Perhaps, in a way, we should be thankful for their lack of seeming effort in the education system. Had they learnt more about the world, they would be a greater danger to it.

Then again, it must be said, I never thought I would live through times, in which people set libraries alight. When I was a young boy, in school, the idea that anyone would actually burn down the greatest library in the world, Alexandria, destroying the heritage of humanity, appalled me. I couldn’t understand how anyone would so lack appreciation of knowledge, art, literature, culture, science and history, that they would be able to do that. Now, however, Britain has a bred a generation of thugs, able to do just that: burn libraries, destroy knowledge, wipe out culture (given a chance). The burning of libraries, often signals the fall of civilizations and the ending of Old Worlds. Let us halt the advance of these particular barbarians and not be fearful of dealing with them in the manner they deserve – before their violent creed becomes the new norm, for a fractured British society. Personally, I would rather see the rioters burn, than our libraries. The real danger, however, in the present British political and social system, is that the rioters will be treated too gently, too kindly and too respectfully ever to teach them to be civilized. These rioters are a threat to Britain as a civilization. They should, therefore, be approached as an existential threat and dealt with, with an appropriate and punitive level of harshness. They should come to learn that Britain will not tolerate barbarians on its soil – not now and not ever (again).

* There are four possible historical culprits for the partial or complete destruction of Alexandria's library. I am not going to disentangle them here - except to say that although not supposedly all barbarians, their attitude to knowledge was certainly barbaric (except for Caesar, who might have burnt it by accident!)

The hidden cost of the Iraq War.

Everyone knows that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have proven costly. Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel Prize Winner, puts that cost at over 3 trillion dollars, in a Washington Post article, The true cost of the Iraq War, here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/03/AR2010090302200.html

What people don’t know – including Joseph Stiglitz – is that the true cost is the opportunity cost of what might have been done with that 3 trillion dollars, instead. I would like you to consider an undeniable fact and an uncomfortable one: it is undeniable, that the Iraq War, was largely over the control of oil. Had Iraq no oil, it would also have had no war. It is uncomfortable, for many of us, to also note that the world’s oil is running out. There are arguments over how long the oil will last – but it cannot be denied, except by the insane, or oil company propagandists (the same thing), that oil is finite and running out fast. Typical estimates are that we have no more than 40 years left at present rates of consumption before the end of oil. Without replacement energy sources, advanced human civilization will, thereafter, be impossible. Sadly, not enough is being done to prepare for this eventuality. The world’s politicians, as usual, lack foresight – or perhaps just don’t care about such seemingly distant events.

Now, at present, the world consumes about one cubic mile of oil per year, and another two cubic miles of oil energy equivalent, per year, for a grand total of three cubic miles of oil per year. See this Wikipedia article for these facts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubic_mile_of_oil

Thus, one third of the world’s total energy comes from oil. Without it, modern civilization would look a lot like the 18th century or so – with no energy for the machines of the Industrial Revolution and beyond. One would have thought that this future inevitability (if nothing is done about it) would occupy the minds of our leaders. Unfortunately, that assumes that our leaders have functioning minds – but close observation puts this in question.

I was struck, on reading the Wikipedia article, by an interesting coincidence. The estimated cost of creating a cubic mile of oil energy equivalence, from wind power, is 3.3 trillion dollars. That is about the money spent on the Iraq War. Now, the Iraq War was about securing energy, as oil, for the USA (whatever else they might say it was about, that was, of course, the true motivation). The USA was so concerned about its energy future, that it decided to kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to secure more oil supplies. It also thought it worth spending 3 trillion dollars to do so. Curiously, that 3 trillion dollars was about the cost of one cubic mile of oil, at 2008 prices (120 dollars per barrel). So, the Iraq war has cost, so far, enough to buy the world’s entire annual oil production for one year. It has also cost enough to create an independent alternative energy source, from wind, equal to one cubic mile of oil per year, for the lifetime of the turbines (20 to 30 years).

Thus, it can be seen that, had the American leadership been intelligent and wise, they could have foregone the Iraq war and spent the funds they would have spent on it – 3 trillion dollars – on creating energy independence for the United States, such that the United States would have no need for an external energy source, ever again.

The decision to go to war in Iraq was not a rational one. It was one derived from very narrow thinking, that did not see the broad context in which the decision was embedded. Nor did it see the alternative means of achieving the ultimate goal – energy security – that existed. It is clear that little intelligence was applied to the decision – no-one paused to reflect on whether there was an alternative way to achieve the unstated goal: energy supply for the USA.

I wish to propose a general principle: The principle of irrational resource wars:

Wars over oil or any other energy source are irrational, since the cost of the war, is always going to be greater than the cost of creating an alternative energy source by investing some of the funds that would have been spent on the war.

America could have secured the energy equivalence of 20 to 30 cubic miles of oil (the lifespan productive capacity of the wind turbines they could have built), for the cost of the Iraq war. I do not think that Iraq’s total oil reserves are likely to amount to as much as this, since the total world reserves are not going to be much greater than that. (Proven oil reserves are at 43 cubic miles of oil…after that runs out, we are in a post-oil world). Indeed, this article in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_proven_oil_reserves suggests that Iraq has just 8.26% of the world’s oil reserves. That would be equivalent to just 3.55 cubic miles of oil. America could have secured 8 and a half times as much energy, for the same investment, as it did in Iraq – and at the cost of no human lives at all.

From this analysis, it can be seen that the Iraq war was irrational – it had great cost in financial and human life terms – yet, there existed an alternative that would have secured permanent energy independence for the United States, had it been implemented.

Never forget this: War is dumb. There are always more intelligent alternatives, to achieve the same ends – unless the end is death itself.
