The boy who knew too much: a child prodigy

This is the true story of scientific child prodigy, and former baby genius, Ainan Celeste Cawley, written by his father. It is the true story, too, of his gifted brothers and of all the Cawley family. I write also of child prodigy and genius in general: what it is, and how it is so often neglected in the modern world. As a society, we so often fail those we should most hope to see succeed: our gifted children and the gifted adults they become. Site Copyright: Valentine Cawley, 2006 +

Technorati Authority and blog diversity.

Technorati is a blog cataloguing site that rates the “authority” of blogs (a measure of how many other blogs link to a particular blog in a six month period). It also gives some insight into how the blogosphere perceives a particular blog.

Today, I checked my Technorati authority. What I found was rather interesting. Although my overall authority at 101 is a decline, from the last time I checked (a popular article of mine, is past six months of age), my blog has garnered interest for many other qualities.

My Entertainment authority stands at 96, ranking me 3,781st out of all entertainment related blogs, worldwide.

My Living authority is 66, ranking me at 27,248th out of all living related blogs, worldwide.

My Family authority is 84, ranking me at 1,712th out of all family related blogs, worldwide.

My Politics authority is 112, ranking me at 3,637th out of all politics related blogs, worldwide.

My U.S Politics authority is 119, ranking me at 2,168th out of all U.S. politics related blogs, worldwide.

My Books authority is 144, ranking me at 1,210th out of all book related blogs, worldwide.

It is somewhat revelatory to see how the blogosphere categorizes my blog, with respect to each of these aspects. It makes me realize that my blog is actually quite diverse in its concerns – and quite well thought of relatively speaking, in each area.

To put my blog rankings in perspective, there were at least 181 million blogs in the world as of early 2012. So, the fact that I should be ranked in the thousands, across so many categories is both gratifying and surprising. It does show that my efforts have been well received, overall.

Thank you to all my readers, particularly those who have chosen to link to my articles to share them with their own readerships. It is much appreciated.

Happy reading, all!

A "Green" blog, on Technorati.

Today, I checked Technorati, to see what its assessment of my blog was. I was both surprised and pleased at what I found.

Apparently, my blog is thought of as a Green blog, in the sense of environmentally concerned. I have a Green Authority of 88, as of today and I am placed at 2,544 on the list of all blogs in the world with a Green theme. That, to me, seems quite a good placing, considering that I only write about Green themes, occasionally and not each and every day, as some Green blogs do.

As an overall assessment, my blog today has a Technorati Authority of 92 and a placement at 27,851 out of all the world's blogs. Again, that is surprisingly good considering how many blogs there are in the world. (Note: according to Wikipedia, there were 156 million public blogs, by February 16th 2011). My blog is accounted, by Technorati, to be in the top 0.0178 %. That is it is 1 in 5,601.

Technorati comes to these assessments by monitoring the linking activity of the whole of the internet in response to a blog. So, my "Green Authority", for instance, comes from the response of the Green community in the blogosphere, and the internet in general, to my blog postings. So, too, for my Technorati Authority: it measures how the internet is responding to my blog posts.

In a way, it is helpful to learn this, from Technorati, since it tells me what I am doing well and how I am affecting the wider world. Without such a monitoring tool, it would be very difficult to know one's impact on the wider world. The only clues I have, other than that, are comments on my blog and my traffic data.

Thank you to all my readers and, in particular those who are linking to my posts. It is heartening to come to understand that my words are having an effect, somehow, somewhere, or at least, some influence.

The mystery of the blog haters.

There are people who love my blog and there are people who hate it. The mystery of this is that BOTH the ones who love it and the ones who hate it, persist in reading it. I would have thought that only the blog lovers would remain - but no, in some ways, some haters are among my more dedicated readers. It is quite bizarre.

There are people who make it clear, elsewhere on the Internet, that they hate what I write...yet they go on to refer to several particular posts, spaced across the span of years. Clearly, these blog haters are, in fact, readers of my blog. I puzzle that this is so: if they dislike what I write - why do they continue to read? It seems that they only do so, because they love to hate: to them, it is a delight to have something to hate. So, they read, to fuel their own hate and give themselves something to complain about on Internet forums.

However, I have noticed something about these haters. They tend to MAKE THINGS UP. They write extremely inflammatory comments on forums, filled with lies. They say, that I have said something I never, in fact, said. They say that my children have done or said things, they never in fact, said or did. They refer to incidents, that are supposed to have happened, as if they were present, when, in fact, no such incidents ever occurred. It seems very clear what is going on here. It is not enough for these haters to hate: they have to try to make others hate, too. So, given that reality does not supply them with good material to engender such hate, they stoop to inventing things, that sound hateful and that are likely, if believed, to create dislike or a negative image. It is all rather distasteful.

Sometimes, these haters link to my blog, after commenting on it, as if expecting the whole world to agree with them. Well, the funny thing is, if people actually read the blog they will find that the haters' hate, is not really justified by the contents of the blog. This blog is no more than a simple account of what we have lived through these past four years. It is nothing more than that. There is and cannot be, anything to hate in the truth - and that is all that I tell, here. If someone has a problem with truth, then, in some way, they are a liar, in their hearts ...or a hater, who needs lies to justify their hate.

This blog is, for some people a beautiful thing. I get people writing to tell me so. They see in it what is less common these days that it should be: a father who is actively involved with his children, trying his best to help them be their best. Too many fathers, these days, are too preoccupied with themselves to give due attention to their children. Some people like that, about this blog...others, however, seem to hate it.

I am trying to bring up my children as best as I can. I am trying to create opportunities for them to become fulfilled. If that is something "hateful" then I really, really worry about the sanity of those who hate what I write. Perhaps that, in fact, is the answer: perhaps my haters are simply mad.

There is, however, something the haters should be aware of: those who love my blog seem to far outnumber those who hate it. There are, therefore, in my estimation, more sane people than insane ones. That is good. There are also more people who appreciate a father trying to do his best for his children - than those who see something wrong in it.

There is one notable type of hater, that I would like to address: this is the type who seems to be personally offended by Ainan's gifts. They seem to wish to bring him down or diminish him, or convince themselves and others that he is less than he is - simply, it seems, because he exceeds their own children in some way. Why, I wonder, do they do this? What Ainan does and is, does not change their own children in any way: so why does it irk them? Their children are their children and mine are mine...it shouldn't really bother them either way - certainly not enough for them to trail across the world's Internet forums posting hate mail. I really worry about their mental stability and perspective on the world.

So, I have a final message for the haters of this world. If you hate my blog, please don't read it. It will only annoy you - and that does no-one any good, except, perhaps, your doctor, who will be able to make money off of your subsequent illnesses. So, if you hate my blog and the way I write it...please just go away and hate someone else. I am sure they will love you for it.

As for the 98% of other people who are not haters, and who enjoy my blog for what it is...I shall resume my normal posting topics, tomorrow.

Thank you for reading, to those who should be reading.

There are readers...

...and there are readers.

Writing this blog has afforded me the opportunity to interact with many interesting people around the world. I have had the chance for "conversations" on a wide variety of topics, with people of diverse views. A number of my readers are insightful, intelligent and fun to "talk" to. However, not all are like that. A very, very small minority - perhaps less than .1%, but noticeable nevertheless, are a strange kind of reader indeed. They are readers who love to hate.

I shall explain. These somewhat deranged readers, lurk on my blog, seemingly reading every post. Yet, their purpose is not to enjoy what they read - it is to pick a fight. It is quite clear from their attempted comments - which are usually too aggressive, extreme or quite simply mad, to post - that they are the same person each time. They have uniquely warped identities that are very obvious. Each one has certain consistent lines of thought and argument. Each one has their "pet hates". Yet, they all share hate, in common. They really, really, really don't like what I write. Yet - and this is the mystery of it - they are regular readers. Whenever I post something with any of the views they don't like, they will try to comment. This can only mean that they are regular readers, waiting and watching for something to argue with. It is really rather mad.

Luckily, there are very few readers like this: less than the fingers on one hand - but that few, is somewhat too many. I find them puzzling. If I were them and someone was writing something I didn't like, I just wouldn't go out of my way to read it. Yet, they do: they read it and they argue with it, they fight it, they throw spite at it. It is bizarre.

Another characteristic they seemingly share is the inability to understand what I write. Their comments show that they have missed the point, or reinterpreted it in the light of their often rather strange world views. Sometimes, they craft what they obviously think are clever arguments, based on a complete failure to understand what I have written - thus showing that their argument is actually rather dim.

What is particularly galling is that with some of them, their position of hate is quite clearly founded on a misunderstanding of where I am coming from. They are making assumptions about my intentions - assumptions of stances which they can't stand.

I do wonder if they are ill. You see very few normal people would keep revisiting a site whose writing they don't like, just so that they can wait for an argument.

Thankfully, this minority of internet anti-fans, is a very small minority indeed. Most of my regular readers - over 99%, I would say - are here because they enjoy something of what I write and like to discuss some of the issues I raise, in a mature manner. Some regulars wish to share their own experiences and viewpoints, too...and so, in this way, we have interesting exchanges. It is for these readers that I continue to write. As for the others...well, I don't suppose they will like this post much will they?

Over 100,000 hits since this blog started.

Today, is a day of celebration on this blog. Today, my total number of reader hits since the blog started 23 months ago, is 100,052.

Now, 100,052 is quite a healthy number, I think, given that there are far too many blogs in the world (roughly speaking there is about one blog for every ten internet connections, according to the last figures I read. In other words, everyone has tens of millions of blogs to choose from. Getting readers in those circumstances is a definite victory.)

Most people who arrive on this blog are interested in giftedness, or education, in some way. So, that figure of 100,000 total readers since the day the blog began, is an indication of the level of interest in these subjects, worldwide. That interest is significant, if not overwhelming. There are many things that people could be interested in, many things they could read. Were I to write a blog on Tom Cruise, I am sure that the readership would be a hundred fold higher. However, I don't think such a blog would add anything worthwhile to the world. There are enough media covering Tom Cruise to make a blog about him unnecessary.

Giftedness, however, is a subject that is both of importance and under-covered, in some ways. There is much that can be said in this arena - and much that needs to be said. It is a subject of dear interest to those parents who have a gifted child to raise and, as such, is worth devoting some energy too.

I would like to thank all my readers for deciding to read some of what I have written. Please pass the word around about this blog so that others, too, might enjoy what I have written, or find value in it, in some way.

To put those figures into perspective, my readership per year has doubled so far in the second year compared to the first. 100,000 hits is a target that I had set myself at the end of the first year, for the second year - and it is one that I have achieved before the year is up. We will see what the actual total for the year comes to on September 19th, 2008 which will be my blog's second birthday.

Happy reading all.

50,000 blog visitors and counting

Today, this blog passed a bit of a milestone: it broke the 50,000 visitor mark. As of 7.55 pm, December 29th 2007, I have had 50,030 visitors to this blog since September 19th 2006 (Day 1).

I don't know how that compares to other blogs, but for me it is a satisfactory outcome. To have had 50,000 readers in every country of the world, is a fair introduction to the internet. Of course, though appreciable, it is a small number compared to the number of people in the world. By that measure about one person in 120,000 has read at least one article from this blog.

Thank you all for taking an interest. Happy reading!

Lost and missing comment posts.

It has been brought to my attention, by a blog reader from America, that comment posts are going missing.

This reader said she had written three comment posts which had not been posted - and was rather put out by it. Well, as I wrote to her, the explanation is simple: I never received the comments. Now this poses the question: how many of your comments are going missing? Is this a general phenomenon? Are people getting frustrated with comments not appearing?

Well, all I can say is that this is the second time someone has asked about comments which I have never received. There is no telling how many people might be affected by this. I post all comments unless they are mad, rude, or likely to pose a problem if read by children. Thankfully, very few posts come into those categories - so almost all comments get posted. If yours has not been posted - and it is not one of those three kinds - then it is probable that I never received your comment post.

I do not know what the problem is - but it seems that, sometimes, blogger does not pass comments onto me. It could be that the commenter is not following comment protocol and is failing to register the comments, properly. Or it could be that blogger is simply losing the comments. I do not know.

So, if you have commented and it hasn't appeared - try again - or email me with the comment and I will see if ever received the comment post in the first place. Thanks.

Super blog readers

As a sequel to my comment about the Finnish reader of my blog, I thought I should add that, contrary to what I had supposed, he or she had not finished reading, at that time. Ultimately, their single visit to the blog amounted to 3 hours, 8 minutes and 8 seconds. They read through 125 pages. Without a doubt, that is the longest anyone has spent on a single visit, to my blog since it began.

Yet, the Finnish reader is not alone. Someone today, from Singapore, spent two hours, eight minutes and 56 seconds on a visit, reading 65 pages.

Thank you all for taking such an interest.

A new champion blog reader?

I have noticed that some new visitors to my blog do spend quite some time reading. Some read many, many posts in one go. I find this encouraging for it indicates that I must be writing something of worth to people - otherwise no-one would take such trouble.

Today is a case in point. A reader from Seinjoki in Western Finland spent 2 hours, 37 minutes and 5 seconds reading 96 pages of my blog. I would have to check back, to see past records, but I think it likely that our Finnish visitor is a new Gold Medallist in the blog reading stakes.
