The boy who knew too much: a child prodigy

This is the true story of scientific child prodigy, and former baby genius, Ainan Celeste Cawley, written by his father. It is the true story, too, of his gifted brothers and of all the Cawley family. I write also of child prodigy and genius in general: what it is, and how it is so often neglected in the modern world. As a society, we so often fail those we should most hope to see succeed: our gifted children and the gifted adults they become. Site Copyright: Valentine Cawley, 2006 +

There are readers...

...and there are readers.

Writing this blog has afforded me the opportunity to interact with many interesting people around the world. I have had the chance for "conversations" on a wide variety of topics, with people of diverse views. A number of my readers are insightful, intelligent and fun to "talk" to. However, not all are like that. A very, very small minority - perhaps less than .1%, but noticeable nevertheless, are a strange kind of reader indeed. They are readers who love to hate.

I shall explain. These somewhat deranged readers, lurk on my blog, seemingly reading every post. Yet, their purpose is not to enjoy what they read - it is to pick a fight. It is quite clear from their attempted comments - which are usually too aggressive, extreme or quite simply mad, to post - that they are the same person each time. They have uniquely warped identities that are very obvious. Each one has certain consistent lines of thought and argument. Each one has their "pet hates". Yet, they all share hate, in common. They really, really, really don't like what I write. Yet - and this is the mystery of it - they are regular readers. Whenever I post something with any of the views they don't like, they will try to comment. This can only mean that they are regular readers, waiting and watching for something to argue with. It is really rather mad.

Luckily, there are very few readers like this: less than the fingers on one hand - but that few, is somewhat too many. I find them puzzling. If I were them and someone was writing something I didn't like, I just wouldn't go out of my way to read it. Yet, they do: they read it and they argue with it, they fight it, they throw spite at it. It is bizarre.

Another characteristic they seemingly share is the inability to understand what I write. Their comments show that they have missed the point, or reinterpreted it in the light of their often rather strange world views. Sometimes, they craft what they obviously think are clever arguments, based on a complete failure to understand what I have written - thus showing that their argument is actually rather dim.

What is particularly galling is that with some of them, their position of hate is quite clearly founded on a misunderstanding of where I am coming from. They are making assumptions about my intentions - assumptions of stances which they can't stand.

I do wonder if they are ill. You see very few normal people would keep revisiting a site whose writing they don't like, just so that they can wait for an argument.

Thankfully, this minority of internet anti-fans, is a very small minority indeed. Most of my regular readers - over 99%, I would say - are here because they enjoy something of what I write and like to discuss some of the issues I raise, in a mature manner. Some regulars wish to share their own experiences and viewpoints, too...and so, in this way, we have interesting exchanges. It is for these readers that I continue to write. As for the others...well, I don't suppose they will like this post much will they?

Some people need to get lives. There are many who do on blogs and forums, lurk around and make arguments constantly. My motto is: "don't feed the trolls".

Yes, Christine you are right. Some people are not happy unless they have someone to argue with - and the internet provides them with an abundance of people to argue with...so they do.

Thanks for reading Christine. I hope the teaching is going well, for you, in Korea.

Kind regards.

Thank you Sid, for your unposted post. I rather felt it was for me, alone to read.

Ainan is at a University now. His focus is the Physical Sciences - Physics, Chemistry and Maths, plus Computer Programming. He has about a hundred choices of other courses he can take, too, in the next couple of years. We are also looking into other programmes he can progress to.

Re. Research: Ainan has done some with me. We are continuously developing in that area.

I am well aware of my responsibility. I am trying my best. We even moved countries so that he could get a better education. So, it is not as if we are not trying.

I shall think about whether to post your post.

Thanks for the reminder.

Woah I am totally very sorry for writing such a rambling and pointless post. I apologize for any/everything I said. You people are very decent, and I wouldn't have written it if I knew that.
I suppose the point I was trying to get across that you should get a proper site for your kids. Blogger sites are a dime a dozen and no one will ever take you seriously if you have such a site. You cannot properly post links - rarely will people read more than 20 links in your child prodigy guide post. The uncapitalized headings...hyphenated name...doesn't convey the correct impression. Its been 4 years, don't you think you shoud upgrade your site? Many well-designed sites with no content exist. You have a shitload of amazing content. It deserves better!
By the way the link for Fintan's leader of pack post doesn't work(to tell the truth, I'm more interested by him than Ainan!)

Dear Sid,

Yes, I suppose another kind of site would be good to have. I have found blogger convenient all this time...I hadn't thought of what impression it might be making to some.

I will give your suggestion some thought.

Re. Fintan: I am glad you find him of interest...he is a very sweet boy, with his very own perspectives.

Unfortunately, I have met all too many examples of this kind of person online. Hence the frustration that comes through in my latest blog post.
